Having a sense of purpose may add years to your life, regardless of what the purpose is, research suggests. Not only does it contribute to healthy aging, but it may also stave off early death, according to a study of 7,000 Americans.
The research, published in Psychological Science, applies across adult life, says a US-Canadian team. It may be because purposeful people look after their health better and are physically fitter, they believe. The study tracked the physical and mental health of more than 7,000 US adults aged 20 to 75 years.
Their purpose in life was assessed by the extent to which they agreed or disagreed with three statement: some people wander aimlessly through life, but I am not one of them. I live life one day at a time and don’t really think about the future. I sometimes feel as I’ve done all there is to do in life.
When followed up 14 years later, the researchers found purposeful people had outlived their counterparts, even when controlling for other factors such as negative mood. Furthermore, the added years did not appear to depend on the person’s age, or whether or not they had retired from work. In other words, having a purpose in life appears to be good for you across the adult years, the researchers say.
Dr. Patrick Hill, head of the department of psychology at Carleton University in Canada, said the notion of living a life of purpose — setting large goals that direct your day-to-day activities seemed to be protective on a number of fronts. “In this study it is mortality, but other studies have shown people report better health,” he told BBC News. “There is clearly a benefit from feeling a sense of direction or felling you have these goals directing your day-to-day life.”

Sun exposure is a major contributing factor for melanoma skin cancer, the fifth most common cancer in the UK, with more than 14,000 people diagnosed each year. A recent research suggests sunscreen alone should not be relied on to prevent malignantmelanoma, a deadly form of skin cancer.
In the new study, scientists at the University of Manchester looked at the effects of UV light on the skin of mice at risk of melanoma. This allowed them to examine the effects of sunscreen in blocking the disease. “UV light targets the very genes protecting us from its own damaging effects, showing how dangerous this cancer-causing agent is,” said lead researcher Prof Richard Marais. Very importantly, this study provides proof that sunscreen does not offer complete protection from the damaging effects of UV light. This work highlights the importance of combining sunscreen with other strategies to protect our skin, including wearing hats and loose fitting clothing, and seeking shade when the sun is at its strongest.
          180. Which of the following statement is true?
          A. Sun exposure is the only factor for skin cancer.
          B. Melanoma skin cancer will not kill people.
          C. Melanoma skin cancer hit many people in U. K.
          D. Sunscreen offers adequate protection.
          181. What does the underlined word “malignant” mean in first paragraph?
          A. fatal B. harmful
          C. wild D. benign
          182. What does the study suggest?
          A. Sunscreen is useless as a protection.
          B. UV light is not as harmful as thought.
          C. Various protection means should be taken.
          D. Wearing hat provides better protection.

Dishes do not usually go bad with time, but are often recycled due to style or convenience. When people get married, move or just see something new they like, they might make room for new flatware in their life. Garage, yard or estate sales can be good places to find kitchen items that are perfectly usable and sometimes even back on trend.
Even if used items require evaluation, making the switch from new to used can make a big difference in your budgetand your life. If you’re willing to find a great deal, resale can lead to great purchases. You can save hundreds or even thousands of dollars-don’t let the shiny and new hold you back from the financial benefits of buying used. On the other hand, there are some things, like safety equipment or mattresses that may be worth the extra money to buy new.
          183. What is the main purpose of this passage?
          A. To encourage the purchase of used items where appropriate.
          B. To inform readers where to buy the used products.
          C. To warn readers about possible disadvantages of buying used stuff.
          D. To compare the difference between the used and the new products.
